South African band Zombies Ate My Girlfriend took first place at the 2016 international Wacken Metal Battle over the weekend , besting the top selections from almost thirty other nations from all over the globe. This is the first time that a band from Africa has been bestowed the top honour.
“This is literally the biggest thing that has ever happened to me, my Zombie brothers, and the South African Metal Scene. I am saying this literally minutes after finding out that we’ve won. My mind is a mess and my heart is elated. Myself and the lads are struggling to process this still. South Africa, we have just written ourselves into metal history! Thank you so much for supporting us with such fervent loyalty. This is not the endgame, this is the start.” ~ Adriano Rodrigues (guitar/writer, Zombies Ate My Girlfriend)
Zombies Ate My Girlfriend first participated in the Wacken Metal Battle in 2013 when the competition opened to South Africa for it’s first year where even as a new band, they made it through to the South African finals. However, the time was not right for them in that year where the local victors, Infanteria, made it through instead. This year, Zombies Ate My Girfriend which incidentally includes two members also from Infanteria, slid through the local heats effortlessly into the finals and beyond. -Metal4Africa
